Where the Crawdads Sing

Chloe Gordon

When I was in elementary school, my mom had a rule for my brother and me that truly shaped my life, my interests, how I consume media.

For every thirty minutes of TV time, we had to spend an hour outside. A ratio, when I was younger, that I absolutely despised. Of course I loved being outside. But I grew up in the deep south of Alabama. Which means mosquitos, devilish heat, and constantly dripping in sweat. It was fine, but spending more than an hour outside on certain days was brutal.

So how did I stay entertained if I couldn’t watch TV like a “normal” kid?

Coffee Shop Vibes

Remember, this is back before the days of YouTube and only right when Webkinz and Club Penguin were taking over youth culture.

So essentially, there was nothing to do except read a good ‘ole book. And when I say I read, I mean I read a lot. Every day, every night before bed. I was the student in class that looked forward to the time in the school day where we had designated reading time. The trips to the library were like if I was Charlie visiting Wonka’s chocolate factory.

I stopped reading when I got to college because by the time I finished my assigned readings of textbooks and unrelated articles assigned to keep us busy, I didn’t want to read for enjoyment. Not to mention, I was living with my best friends so there was never downtime to just chill and read.

But now that I’m done with college, I’ve been reading like I was a kid again. I recently read a book that I can’t stop telling people about. It’s one of those “can’t put ‘em down, bury your nose, read until your eyes get too heavy” kind of books. Simply put, it was the best book I’ve read in a really long time.

The essence of the story is simple, a girl against the world, quite literally. I feel like I can’t describe it in too much detail without ruining the ending, but I promise you’ll love it. The topics include those of loneliness, love, family, mystery, confusion regarding the purpose and meaning of life.

So, in short, read it. It’s called Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. A work of art.

fall 2018 trendspotting

SHOPChloe GordonComment

Let’s talk trend spotting. This whole summer I’ve been working in a retail store surrounded by high end fashion. It’s so inspiring getting to help people find styles and trends that they really love. But, let me tell you a secret, it’s even more fun getting to find these things for myself (selfish? maybe a little. fun? heck yeah). So anyways, two trends that I’ve noticed that are going to be huge this fall are wide leg pants and anything in the color mustard. I was shopping for these two items myself but I decided to share some of my favorite finds with you guys to balance out my selfish comment above.

And that's all I've got for ya now. But, I'd love to know, what trends are you loving lately? Keep me cool, share your thoughts in the comments.

INTERNET ROUND UP

READ

I read this short passage on Tumblr the other day and my mind was blown. I always think about getting into ruts with what I physically do each day, but I’ve never really thought about the ruts we’re in with things we don’t think about as often — especially when it comes to words. Toc-Tic is just wrong.

WATCH

If I could choose any famous person’s sense of humor to take for my own it would, hands down, be Steve Harvey. He’s hilarious and I always find myself watching his “best of” videos on YouTube, especially when I’m in need of some cheering up. This video is one of my favorites, and that little boy.. SO CUTE.

Confession, when I looked up the link to this video I got distracted by all of the Little Big Shot videos so watch all of them haha.

LISTEN

In honor of my friends going to his concert this week, I decided to share RUFUS DU SOL. I love his song “Sundream” and think you guys should give it a listen. It’s kinda bumpin’ but also chill. The perfect summer night song.

SHOP

I’m working at Anthropologie this summer and it’s dangerously awesome. I want to spend my paychecks on literally everything in the store and it’s taking all of my will power not to purchase one of each. However, a lot of my co-workers have been purchasing this jumpsuit and I’m dying to try it on. Jumpsuits never look that great on me, but I’m convinced I need it.

SEE

Something about this photo illuminates summer. Maybe it’s the fleetingness of it — summer is here and then gone in the blink of an eye. Maybe it’s the black and white. Maybe it’s the bare feet on the pedals. All I see is summer.

Be Radiant

Girls have it rough. Not only do we have to deal with crippling patriarchy on the daily, but we have to deal with things like makeup, stupid people, and periods too. I mean, don’t get me wrong, down with the patriarchy and up to the rise of feminism, but in the moment, periods feel much worse.

You have to deal with the pains of PMS, the constant worrying of leaking through, and just the overall miserableness that it endures. It’s literal hell. No joke. Not kidding. 100% serious.

But you know what I discovered that makes life so much better so that we can conquer the effects of the patriarchy? Tampax Radiant Tampons. When you find something that works you stick with it. You live by it. They’re up to 100% leak free which leads to less stress and more time for fun.

My friends and I went to the pumpkin patch this past weekend. Instead of worrying the whole time I was able to live fully in the moment and enjoy time with my friends. I could wear whatever I wanted without having to worry even a little bit, ‘period or not.’ We had a great time just getting off campus and enjoying the warm weather. It was so worth the 30 minute drive. I definitely recommend hitting the pumpkin patch with your friends. It also makes for the perfect backdrop. Take my word for it.

Confidence Is Key

RANDOM STUFF, FASHIONChloe GordonComment

We all have those things we don’t like about ourselves. We stand in front of our mirrors and think of a million and one reasons to not be confident. Why? Why can’t we love ourselves. Why do we pick ourselves apart? Is it out of fear? Or are we just blind to our own beauty?

I don’t know how to answer any of these questions, but I do know that, depending on what I wear, I feel more confident. I’m not sure what it is about the perfect outfit that allows me to be more, well, me.

It’s not about wearing a certain brand or trend, it’s more about how something makes you feel. You know in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants when they each wear the jeans in certain situations and, in their own ways, are bursting out of the seams with confidence. It’s about that, it’s about wearing something that empowers you to be the fullest extent of yourself. It’s about being confident beyond how you look, and more about how you feel. Absorb confidence and release it to others. Confidence is contagious.

My froomie (friend / roommate) and I wondered around campus the other day in our favorite and confidence boosting outfits to create this little video. I hope it inspires you to be more confident and less nitpick-y of those little things about yourself that no-one even notices anyways.

A HUGE shoutout to my friend Jeremy for directing/filming/editing this film. Go checkout his Instagram clips. You won’t regret it, plus I’m 100% sure he’s going to be doing huge things in the future.

This post is sponsored by Tampax, and I love that their brand spreads the ideals of confidence. They aspire to inspire girls to #WearWhatYouWant and #BeRadiant; I love that their messaging go against what most girls think of when they have their period. Most girls avoid short skirts, white pants, and tight anything. But you know what? If those short skirts, white pants, and tight anything make you feel confident then by all means rock them. Own it. Do you.

Wear What You Want

RANDOM STUFFChloe Gordon1 Comment

Have you heard the fact about how your tastebuds change every seven years? It’s weird how accurate it is too; I’m about to turn 21 (and enter into my third set of tastebuds) and everything food related that I previously enjoyed is taking a shift. I used to love spicy foods endlessly, but now, if something is just a little bit spicy, I have the hardest time eating it. Weird, right?

The thing is though, not only have my tastebuds been undergoing a shift, but my fashion sense has as well. I used to be extremely preppy. We’re talking Lilly Pulitzer galore, but lately I’ve been feeling the more edgy vibes: chokers, mom jeans, cool sunglasses. Obviously transitioning your entire style is a process, but I’ve discovered what I feel more confident in and what represents me fully. I think fashion is so much fun because it really does represent who you are and it’s awesome because it can change daily. I can still be preppy one day and still be “edgy” the next… #WearWhatYouWant, you feel?

I don’t know if you already saw it, but Meghan Trainor worked with Tampax to inspire girls to wear what they want and to feel confidently doing so. I think this message is so important because fashion should be something that makes you feel like your best self. You should wear things because you want to, because you feel good in them, and not for any other reasons. I think it’s cool how Meghan Trainor’s fashion is also representative of her music — it’s loud, it’s bold, and it’s unapologetic. I love it.

But speaking of Tampax, let’s talk about confidence a little. I feel like, as girls, there’s this awkward space of ether being “too confident” or not confident enough. But you know what, my motto is be as confident as you can. There’s no such thing as “too confident,” ever. And if anyone makes you feel like there is, they don’t deserve to know you. To be completely 100% honest with you though, I feel my most unconfident when I’m on my period. All I want to do is lay in my bed and feel sorry for myself, but I promise you, when I remember what Tampx stands for and when I think about how fearlessly confident people like Meghan Trainor are, I’m inspired to get out of bed and get stuff done.

The other day I was having one of those days where I literally could’ve stayed in bed all day and just moped around, but my friends and I decided to take a little day trip to this little lake near our school. It was honestly one of the best days I’ve had in a while. We got out there and seized the day. TMI, maybe, but I was on my period and didn’t worry at all because I know how leak free the Tampax Radiant Collection is. I was confident in my “edgy” outfit, even during one of my most unconfident days of the month. Seriously you guys, if you’re ever worried about leaking during your period you’ve got to try the Tampax Radiant Collection, they’re bomb.

So my tastebuds might be changing regarding food, but I know that my tampon selection will 100% always be with Tampax.
