Inspired by Home Depot

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot, but all opinions are my own.

As you know, Chloe and I've been working with The Home Depot to build our Flower Tower, which was a blast! Spring has finally sprung, and it was the perfect time to join the Garden Club, because following their Instagram and Pinterest has led to such a burst in creativity. We've solved gardening problems and had fun gardening & crafting!

One problem that had been vexing me (yes, "vexing"!) for years, was these planters (pictured below) on my front porch. I adore them. But it wasn't mutual. In planters, I follow the rule of gardening to thrill, fill, and spill. But all I could do with these planters was simply fill, which meant that the plants were barely visible above the planter, or if they were taller, they never had enough "oomph." They were simply blah year after year.

I'm so excited about having a Flower Tower in these planters. Vertical gardening is the perfect solution to add soil to a planter that doesn't have much space, but needs added interest and visual height. Just a few rows of galvanized wire shaped to fit the window type planter, potting soil, landscape fabric and plants are all I need to have these planters make a colorful statement!

Plus, I will have some needed screening from the street since we live in an urban area. You can barely see the galvanized wire in the picture below, which is wonderful since I've procrastinated due to the April rain and won't start on this project until this weekend.

Another idea I was inspired by was the pots I fell in love with at The Home Depot. I've painted plenty of pots in my day, but lately I'm completely obsessed with Washi Tape and wanted a project that the kids and I could do in a jiffy. Simply buy clay pots at Home Depot and either paint them with acrylic paint in your choice of color, or leave them au naturel, and apply Washi Tape in any pattern you desire.

Since we wanted pots in our kitchen, we selected herbs for our Washi Tape pots. Some Home Depot locations have organic herbs that I would pinch off and use for cooking! You could also start your own herbs using seeds from Home Depot and the seed starting instructions from the Home Depot Garden Club - it's super simple.  Some of my favorite ways to use herbs and edible flowers, besides in everyday cooking are:

  • as a sprig in gift wrapping (especially lavender),
  • tucked in with a napkin and napkin ring at the dinner table,
  • in sachets,
  • in water or tea (flowers are especially cute frozen in ice cubes), or
  • sprinkled on salads!

The list is endless.

But back to Washi Tape... here's what the kids and I had fun making. And it only took a few minutes, just wrap washi tape around the top edge. Or cut pieces and apply to the top edge, then plant, place in a sunny location, and enjoy!

Make your Flower Tower a Blooming Success!

I've had such a blast building our Flower Tower and being part of The Home Depot Garden Club! I was so excited to #digin and try vertical gardening for the first time and this project definitely added the much needed punch of color and height that my patio was lacking.

Along the way, I picked up a few tips and tricks that I'd like to pass along so you can make sure your Flower Tower is a blooming success!

1. Select your flower pot first. It will help you determine which height galvanized wire landscape fabric will be best for your project. If you buy a wide and deep pot, the 4 ft. galvanized wire and 4 ft. landscape fabric is perfect, but for a small pot (13" or smaller), I would suggest 3 ft. wire and 3 ft. landscape fabric.

2. Buy the largest bag of potting soil available. I filled a 13" pot and 4 ft. wire Flower Tower using a large bag of potting soil, plus extra. BUT, if you do not have help, it might be easier to buy two small bags because a large bag is h-e-a-v-y which makes pouring the soil into the tower difficult. (Chloe and I did it together.)

3. Build your Flower Tower where you will be placing it unless you are a power lifter, or have a trolley. Wish I'd thought ahead! Also, do not  build this on your nice outdoor table. It's heavy and this advice seems like common sense. It should be. (Watch the end of my video and see why my husband calls me "the Julia Childs of gardening.")

4. Do not be discouraged if your Flower Tower doesn't look perfect when finished. It won't be as lush and full like the one from the The Home Depot Garden Club website and instead  may looks like ours, which will perk up, fill out, and fill in just as if you had planted in the ground. Crowding will only make your plants unhappy in the long run, and your Flower Tower should last through fall with TLC!

5. Shopping for supplies doesn't take long . Just ask if you can't find something, and don't get distracted by all the dreamy grills, amazing pot varieties, and endless flower choices!

6. Flower selection is based on pot size and height of your Flower Tower. I used 3 flats of pansies (impatiens are pictured below) with a 13" pot and 4 ft. galvanized wire, trimmed a bit. You should adjust according to your pot size and galvanized wire size.

That's it, this is a simple project and loads of fun! Happy building and be sure to check out our other Flower Tower posts:

Home Depot Flower Tower: Supply Time!

All, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe4 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot, but all opinions are my own.

So what was the first thing Chloe and I did when we got ready to #digin and build our Flower Tower? After joining The Home Depot Garden Club and taking a look at the supplies we would need, we hopped in the car and headed to our local Home Depot. I know, I know... if you're anything like me, having a shopping list can make your eyes glaze over!

But, since I've been a longtime regular shopper at The Home Depot, I knew I'd have no trouble finding exactly what I needed, because the store service is exceptional. It's not ok, it's not sometimes good... it's always fantastic. (Reality Check: I'm saying it because it's always been true for me!) If you can't find something, just ask an employee.

Since it was a gorgeous day, we started in the garden area and quickly gathered a flower pot, work gloves, garden spade, and landscape fabric. We're over 1/3 done shopping!

Flower Tower Supplies

I asked where the galvanized wire was, which we were told was behind the lumber. I passed utility knives on the way, so grabbed one in red (it matched my outfit and that was super-important) and picked up the galvanized wire, which is on the opposite side of the store from gardening in the very back, FYI, and then asked about the snips and ties. TIP: Since we cut our wire down, I think the 3 ft. wire could be tall enough, depending how wide your pot is and the height you want Flower Tower. Remember, you need enough wire IN your pot for it to be steady.

The fence ties, located in Electronics, are simply zip ties and come in even lengths, except online, so we bought a 20 pack of 6" zip ties. The Home Depot employees also helped us find the tin snips which we learned cut through wire and tin. We purchased ones that look like scissors because we thought they would be more useful in an all-around sort of way. Chloe and I will be able to use them in all types of DIY projects, I'm sure!

The Home Depot

We saved the heaviest and most fun supplies for last: the potting soil and plants. We selected a large bag of Moisture Control potting soil since I wanted something that would drain easily and conserve water when I, ahem, forget to water! TIP: I needed even more soil, so you might need another small bag of soil.

And lastly, I chose flowers, originally wanting to place the Flower Tower on my porch which truly needs a punch of color. But, I selected pansies, due to color, size, and spreading capabilities, and they need at least 6 hours of sunlight, so this Flower Tower is going on the back patio, and my next one will grace the front! I bought 4 flats of pansies and used 3. TIP: The Home Depot has a wonderful return policy and will accept returns of annuals so long as they are still in excellent shape.

Thanks to the amazing customer service, we were done in almost a jiffy (note to self: chat less, keep laser focused instead of admiring flowers, & shop more!) and headed home to begin our project!
